Sundown National Park - May 2017

Another long weekend another trip, this time to Sundown National Park 3 hours south west of Brisbane near Stanthorpe. This is somewhere we'd been meaning to go for many years and finally got around to it. Excellent camping, beautiful scenery and good company. It's been great to actually get out and make good use of all the things I've done to make the D4 a camping base and 4WD weapon. We were lucky to have perfect weather, cool to cold nights and mornings and clear mild days.

The Burrows Waterhole campsite has a couple of drop toilets and plenty of well spaced sites that provide a bush camp feel that we really liked. We were worried about it being a bogan-fest but to our grateful surprise it was a family-friendly atmosphere without any issues. Speaking to a regular camper it was apparently quite a busy weekend for Burrows so that's an even better sign. I'd be really happy to go back.

The driving was a good mix of technical and general fun driving, particularly on the Rats Castle Loop. It's pretty rocky and has a couple of rutted, steep hills and river crossings that are not excessively deep but with just enough length and deep to hold your concentration. Much of the rocks are river bed smooth but there's also some very sharp terrain as well. Andrew was on 20" wheels and his tyres were not really up to the punishment. For me, the BFG KO2's further proved themselves to be an excellent all-round performer and I was particularly happy with the traction in sometimes scrabbly conditions.

Scenic river crossing video.
